We gave a lot of thought to what or whether we should charge for poetry readings, which we know are often free. But why should poets not be as worthy of their hire as musicians, comedians, footballers or actors?

We all know that were it not for sponsoring 'Angels', very few shows would reach Broadway. Operas are underwritten by subscribers. Subscription has always benefitted poetry. Without it, there would have been no 'Kilmarnock' or 'Edinburgh' editions of Burns' poems.

Without that list of people willing to put their money where his mouth was, he would never have been published at all! 'Subs' or dues are the potential energy that Vital Synz can turn kinetic.

Our individual track records as poets, teachers, critics, festival directors, workers in the media and enthusiasts, will we hope, inspire confidence in what we can do, based on what we have done.

With your help, collectively we can do more to promote the poetry and poets of the city and further establish the international reputation, forged by people like Edwin Morgan, of Glasgow as a place where poetry matters.
