May 2008 - Gerry McGrath

Gerry McGrath was born in Helensburgh in 1962 and lived there until he was 23. Studied modern languages at Strathclyde University and was briefly and unsuccessfully a research student at Glasgow. Worked (and didn't) thereafter in different locations in various capacities.
Fell into schoolteaching in '93. Got ill in '98 and left in 2000.
Started reading poetry at 13. Started writing poetry at 40.
In 2004 he was co-winner of the Robert Louis Stevenson Memorial Award.
In 2007 he was awarded a New Writer's bursary by the Scottish Arts Council.
Carcanet are publishing his first collection A to B this month.
